Vagina Kung-Fu?
Being a busy woman, I occasionally read rather than watch the news. Spare me the newspaper though, I’d much rather trawl a few of my
favourite websites (plus I can bookmark good stuff! Whereas I know that any clippings from the newspaper I kept would soon be accidentally rustled up and chucked out once bin night rolls around).
The tough part about reading the news online is that sometimes you don’t know what’s a joke and what’s serious. This is precisely what happened to me a couple weeks ago when I stumbled across an article on Buzzfeed about a weightlifting lady who lifts things… with her vagina! I laughed. I cried. I paused and realized that these people were serious.
The incredible Kim Anami LIFTS THINGS WITH HER VAGINA. Anami coined the term “vaginal kung fu” for her bizarre and amazing skill set. On instagram, you’d swear her photos were just like every other health-nut or yoga teacher out there, if it weren’t for the objects swinging between her legs. I have to admit, I giggled a bit as I scrolled through pictures of her lifting bunches of bananas, surfboards, doughnuts and even actual gym weights!
I just couldn’t seem to process WHY you would want to lift your groceries with your wonderful, warm ladyparts?
Well, it turns out that practicing vaginal kung-fu can have some pretty appealing benefits. Anami claims that the practice can help women reconnect both physically and emotionally to their vaginas (probably not something that I need, my vagina and I are good pals). However, the sexual benefits, are OMG inducing!
MindBodyGreen lists some of the benefits of vaginal kung-fu as: having more and BETTER orgasms, including the ability to ejaculate; strengthen your pelvic floor – great for those who are concerned about prolapses and looseness; increase sensitivity and feeling in the vagina which means more stimulating sex; helps increase circulation and thus natural lubrication during intercourse; and – impressively- shoot ping pong balls across the room!
According to Anami, 99.9% of women “haven’t mastered this essential life skill”. I am not sure about ping pong ball shooting being an essential life skill, but it’d make a heck of a party trick.
Now, before you go trying to carry your lunch around from your vajayjay, there are a few things to consider. The last thing you want to do is hurt yourself, or land bum first in a bunch of bananas. Before jumping straight into a hefty routine, work on your pelvic strength gently first with kegels – building up the weight and reps, just as you would any other muscle at the gym. This article from Women’s Health Mag recommends starting at 20 kegels a day, building up the weight as you go. When you can lift your kegel balls with minimal effort, you know it’s time to switch to a slightly heavier ball.
These weighted kegels will help tighten and strengthen your vagina, giving you all the benefits of vaginal kung-fu over the long term.
If you’re looking to start gentle and work up, a kegel ball set or Ben Wa ball set may be for you. Sets like the Je Joue – Toning Duo Balls
are great because they come in a set of three and offer weights of 47g, 78g and 106g so that you can build your skills. It’s surprising how heavy even the smallest weight can feel at first!
Psst, there’s also the Icicles glass Ben Wa balls, which are particularly wonderful as you can warm them up slightly in the microwave before use – which feels very very delightful! These glass
balls can also be washed in the dishwasher, which is super convenient if you’re using them often.
Needless to say, my exercise regime involves a few more weights now!
