We’ve talked about kink and the accessories that go with it plenty of times, but we haven’t talked about this one yet. The name itself even sounds like a warning… but what is it and who does it? Of course, there’s also the question we all should ask ourselves about a new kink: is it for me?

Defining Edge Play

In fact, there are two different but related meanings for the term “edge play”, both of which are entirely valid. Taken more generally, ‘edge play’ essentially means extreme sexual play that might seem or could even be risky if you don’t know what you’re doing or make a big mistake—a little like skydiving—taking your sexual play all the way to the edge, as it were.

In that sense, ‘the edge’ could mean a lot of things. On the one hand, it could very well mean sexual play that includes the chance of incurring harm to one or more participants, including the more narrow second meaning: play with a literal edge like that of a knife. Things like breath play, fire play, and higher-voltage electricity play also fall under this category. It can either be done by itself or incorporated with other kinks like bondage, pegging, or orgasm denial. (half the fun is mixing things up!) Edge play could also simply mean taking one or both partners to the limit or beyond of their typical sexual boundaries, physical or otherwise.

Never Forget Safety!

I’m far from the kind of person to dissuade anyone from trying out new things in the bedroom, but I cannot stress enough the need to be safe, sane, and consensual when engaging in edge play! If you’re going beyond one or both your comfort zones, establishing and respecting hard boundaries and safety words is absolutely critical, especially when specialised equipment is involved. I like to establish more than one safety, in case it’s hard for me or my partner to talk. Establishing a secondary signal is a very good idea. For example, you might use a siren noise or hum (loudly!) a particular tune as a backup to your safe word.

Though it’s difficult to do right and safely, edge play can be a lot of fun and very hot, in fact, can be extremely emotionally rewarding as long as you follow the rules. There’s a lot of variety in the different kinds of edge play, and pretty much all of it can include a myriad selection of sex toys, so why not think about it, do a little research and see if you’re ready to push your boundaries?

‘Edge Play’ is a term that we see thrown around the kink community every now and then, often in hushed tones, almost a taboo among taboos.
